STURGIS.  The same as English Sturgess (q.v.), a variant form of Anglo-Saxon Thurgis (q.v.), from Old Norse Thórgísl (q.v.), meaning "Thor's hostage."  This is the preferred American spelling.

    Sturgis—Sometimes, where the original name began with th, it has been altered by use of st, as Sturgess for Thurgis, from N., Thorgisl... (Surname Book and Racial History, Gates, 1918).
