| SUZUB. The
son of Gahal,
a chief of the Kaldai, who, after the emigration of Merodach-Baladan to
Nagitu, raised revolt in Southern Babylonia, but was routed by
Sennacherib, at Bit-Tutu, in B.C. 700. In B.C. 697, with the help of
the Elamites, he proclaimed himself king of Babylon, but was again
defeated and sent bound to Nineveh, Erech being sacked. Suzub soon
escaped, and about B.C. 692 was assisted by the Elamites to enter Babylon
and re-ascend the throne. He purchased the aid of Umman-minaro of
Elam, with the treasures of the temples of Bel, Nebo, and Nergal; but the
confederates were totally routed in the great battle of Khalule, and in
the following year Babylon was taken by storm and razed. Suzub died
soon afterwards, through a fall from his horse.
