Etymology of the name SHANIKA.
Meaning of the baby name SHANIKA.

SHANIKA.  Unisex.  African Bantu name, probably meaning "young Nika" or "young one from the wilderness."  This was the name of an Ovambo chief of the Ovangandjera tribe (who may have been a refugee); the territory he and his people occupied was called Ongandjera and was located in southwestern Africa.  The Ovambo are Bantu. (Accounts and Papers, Colonies and British Possessions, v.17, 1918).  The first part of the name, Sha-, is probably an adjective meaning "new, young." (A Comparative Grammar of the South African Bantu Language, Torrend, 1891).  The second part, -nika, might be taken for its literal meaning, "wilderness," or it may denote the Nika ethnic group or language. (A Gazetteer of Ethnology, Matsumura, 1908).
