TAHIRAH (طاہرہ). A
feminine
form of Arabic Tahir
(q.v.), meaning "clean, immaculate, pure," from tāhir.
(An English and Arabic Dictionary,
Catafago, 1873). Also spelled Tahira. Usage: Egypt, Persia (Iran).
... That the mere appearance,
in this capacity, of a young and beautiful woman—for in the ardour of
preaching the veil would sometimes fall aside—should have attracted
the multitude was to be expected, nor was it wonderful that, with a
simple and moving eloquence superadded, she should have turned the heads
even of grave doctors as well as the hearts of the multitude. She
was known as Kurratu'l 'Ain, i.e. Delight of the Eyes, or Hazrat-Tahirah,
Her Excellency the Pure, a title which, according to the general
testimony of both friends and foes, was indisputably her due.
Although educated women are not altogether rare in Persia, it is hardly
to be wondered at that the immediate family of Kurratu'l 'Ain should
have highly disapproved of so startling a departure both from the
conventional and from the orthodox... (The Scottish Review, v.19,
1892)
