TIAMAT.
In Akkadian mythology the goddess who presided over the
creation. She was a form, or rather another name, of the goddess
Tihamtu, "The Sea." See Tihamtu.

TIAMAT. "Chaos." A Babylonian deity. The goddess Tiamat with the god Apsu
(q.v.) is represented in the Epic of Marduk (q.v.) as existing from the
first. The two deities are virtually identical, one being the male,
the other the female principle. Both personify primaeval
chaos. Tiamat both in sound and meaning resembles the Hebrew word Těhōm.
Tiamat appears as a great monster with a train of other monsters, chief of
which is Kingu
(q.v.). The other gods are created after Tiamat, and there
ensues a battle between them and Tiamat with her monsters. In this
battle Marduk is the champion and representative of the other gods.
The result is that Marduk (Order) conquers Tiamat (Chaos). (An
