| TAHARKA. A
king of Egypt of the XXVth dynasty. He succeeded Shabaka I., whose
sister he married, and at the request of Hezekiah, king of Judah, invaded
Palestine to repulse Sennacherib, king of Assyria. The news of his
arrival caused that monarch to withdraw from Judea, whereupon a few years
later Taharka incited Bahal, king of Tyre, also to revolt against
Esarhaddon, the son and successor of Sennacherib, B.C. 672. The two
kings were, however, defeated by the Assyrians, and in the twenty-third
year of the reign of Taharka, Esarhaddon invaded and conquered all Egypt,
parcelling the country out into an Icosarchy of twenty kings, and annexing
it to Assyria. On Esarhaddon falling ill the king of Egypt again
raised an army, and re-conquered Upper and Lower Egypt as far as
Memphis. A second time he was defeated by Assurbanipal, who now
reigned as joint king with his father Esarhaddon. On the Assyrians
quitting the kingdom, the Egyptians for a third time rose in insurrection
under Taharka, but he was at last finally subdued by Assurbanipal
selecting one of the minor kings of Egypt, Necho of Memphis, to govern the
country as his viceroy. Upon the approach of Necho with the Assyrian
army, Taharka retired to Napata, the capital of Nubia, where he died after
a reign of twenty-six years, leaving the throne of Ethiopia to Rut-amen
the son of Shabaka. Taharka repaired several temples, and built the
colonnade which precedes the Hypostyle Hall of Columns at Karnak. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
