TAXIMAGULUS.
Celtic name meaning "Commander-in-chief," from Tascio-magol. A title denoting a paramount chief,
especially when leading his forces into battle. (Celtic Inscriptions on
Gaulish & British Coins, Poste, 1861)
This
Tasciovan, or, as the Romans Latinized the name, Tasciovanus, is
possibly the chieftain referred to by Caesar, under the name of
Taximagulus,* that is, Tascio Magol, the great chief; but no
facts of interest are disclosed by the Roman commentator concerning him.
* Mr. Birch, however, thinks that Taximagulus was a
Kentish prince, and not Tasciovan. (Recreative Science, v.2,
1861)
