THEODOR. German.
From
Latin Theodorus (q.v.), meaning "divine gift."
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
Mattenheimer,
Theodor, born at Bamberg in 1787, was instructed in painting by his
father, Andreas Theodor Mattenheimer, and afterwards attended the
Academy at Munich, and in 1811 that at Vienna. Subsequently he
became inspector, conservator, and director of several galleries, and
distinguished himself by his paintings of still-life. Of his
portraits those of the Duchess Mary Anne and the Queen of Prussia are
noteworthy. He successfully restored several paintings in the
churches at Munich, in which city he died in 1850. (Dictionary of
Painters & Engravers, Bryan, Williamson, 1904)
