THIUDAREIKS. Gothic name meaning "people's ruler." This was the name of a
son of Theudemir, and king of the Ostrogoths in Italy, from 475 to
527. He had been a hostage to Constantinople, and there educated;
and though he could not write his name, and had a stamp perforated with
the letters Theod to enable him to sign his edits, he was exceeding able,
wise, and skilful, and Arian as he was, conciliated the love of the
Catholics. (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884). The Frank form is Theodoric.
... On the day when the news
was brought to Theudemer of his brother's triumph, a son was born to
him. This "child of victory" was the great Theoderic [Thiudareiks],
who was destined to fulfil the omen of his birth, and to raise the
Ostrogothic nation to the highest position among the people of the
Teutonic stock. (Story of the Goths, Bradley, 1891)
