TIGRANES (Τιγράνης).  Greek form of Armenian Dikran (q.v.), probably meaning "dominant."  This was the name of several kings of Armenia.  The best known is Tigranes the Great who ruled from about 95-55 B.C.  He died about 56, and was succeeded by his son Artavasdes. (The Encyclopaedia Britannica, v.26, 1911)
