TUBAL.
Biblical. [Hebrew Thubal, תּוּבַל
= "iron" or "metal" ?].
(1) The
fifth "son of Japheth (Gen. x. 2; 1 Chron. i. 5).
(2) The tribe to which he gave origin. It is
mentioned with Javan (Isa. lxvi. 19) and with Meshech (Ezek. xxxii. 26)
as trading in the Tyrian markets with slaves and vessels of brass
(copper or bronze) (Ezek. xxvii. 13). Gog was the chief prince of
Meshech and Tubal (xxxviii. 2, 3; xxxix. 1). The descendants of
Tubal are the Tublà of the Assyrian inscriptions and the Tibareni or
Tibarenoi of the classical writers. (For their country and
history, see Meshech.)
