| TUGULTI-NINIP. Tugulti-ninip
I., an early king of Assyria. He ascended the throne B.C. 1271,
and was the son of Shalmaneser I. He still further extended the
limits of the Assyrian empire, and lived chiefly at Nineveh, where he
enlarged the temple of Ishtar. He reigned forty years, and was
succeeded by Belkuduruzzur. Tugulti-ninip II., the son and
successor of Vulnirari II., king of Assyria. He ascended the throne
B.C. 891, and re-conquered the district of Nairi. During a reign of
six years he considerably enlarged the empire. He set up a
commemorative tablet near the source of the Euphrates recording his
victories. Tugulti-ninip died B.C. 885, and was succeeded by his son
Assurnazirpal. (An Archaic
