URIEN. Arthurian.
The
Welsh form of Uranius
(q.v.), meaning "heavenly." George
("husbandman") sometimes represents Urien. This is the name of an
actual historical king of Rheged who came to be incorporated into
Arthurian legend. Also see Uriens.
... Then Sir Ewaine said unto
the knight, "Sir Unknown Knight, this knight, my companion, is
Gawaine, son of King Urien of Gore, and I am Ewaine, the son of King Lot
of Orkney. Now, I crave of thee that wilt make thyself known unto
us in like manner. (The Story of King Arthur, Pyle, 1909)
... Uranius makes its
appearance among the Welsh as Urien, a somewhat common name at
one time. "Brave Urien sleeps upon his craggy bed;" but
Camden, or some one else before him, thought proper to identify it with
George, which has led to its decay and oblivion. (History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
