URIJAH. Biblical.
[Hebrew Uriyah, Uriyahu
= "light of Jehovah." Nos. 1, 3, and 4 are of the first
form, and No. 2 of the second].
(1) The high
priest in Ahaz's reign who was directed to make an altar like that which
caught the king's fancy at Damascus (2 Kings xvi. 10-16).
(2) A prophet, the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim.
He agreed with Jeremiah in predicting that the kingdom of Judah was
about to be temporarily destroyed, which so enraged king Jehoiakim that
he sought to kill the prophet of evil. Urijah fled to Egypt, but
was brought back and slain (Jer. xxvi. 20-23).
(3) [Uriah
(3)]. (Neh. iii. 4, 21.)
(4) [Uriah
(4)]. (Neh. viii. 4—A.V.). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible
