Meaning of the baby name VANESSA.

VANESSA.  A form of Phanessa (q.v.), a Latinate feminine form of Orphic Phanes (q.v.), meaning "the Apparent-one."  Usage: America, Australia, Brazil, England, France, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain.

Vanessa.  So styled by Dean Swift, who exerted a kind of enchantment over her as he had done over Stella; Hester Vanhomrigh, the daughter of a London merchant, who died of a broken heart, 1723. (A Dictionary of Terms, Phrases, and Quotations, Smith-Johnson, 1895)

... At the same time it was borne by the two ladies who had the misfortune to be the object of Dean Swift's affectation, Esther Johnson and Esther Vanhomrigh, whom he called, one by the Latin name Stella; the other, by the generic title of our finest English butterflies, Vanessa. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
