VERCINGETORIX. Ancient
Celtic name, compounded of Ver-cyn-y-tws-(a)-rix, meaning, "the
high king paramount and commander." (Celtic Inscriptions
on Gaulish & British Coins, Poste, 1861). Yonge renders this
name "chief of one hundred heads." (History of Christian
Names, Yonge, 1884).
VII.
Vercingetorix, a brave and high-spirited chief of Southern Gaul, effects
a confederacy of the whole country, which is at length subdued.
Vercingetorix, in brilliant equipment, surrenders himself to secure the
quiet of the country, and is taken in chains to Rome, where he is
afterwards put to death in Caesar's triumph... (Caesar's Gallic War,
Allen-Judson, 1891)
