chief of the Ædui, mentioned by Cæsar, Gaulish Wars, vii, 38, 40, 54,
63. This name affords a further exemplification, and is Guiredd-o-mawr, i.e., "the great justiciary," or
"functionary;" a title bestowed by Cæsar, who raised him to the
dignity, as less likely to excite ambitious ideas than that of Rex.
The Ædui themselves appear to have given titles with this view, as
their chief officer was styled Vercobretus, or "principal
