VISHNU (विष्णु).  In Hindu mythology the third member of the Trimurti, and preserver of the world.  He had undergone ten Avatars or incarnations, viz., a bird, tortoise, wild boar, andro-lion, the deity Khrishna, etc. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).  The name is said to mean "the pervader," from vish, to pervade. (Papers on Great Indian Questions of the Day, 1903).
