| VUL-NIRARI. Vul-nirari
I, an early and powerful king of Assyria about B.C. 1330. He
defeated the Babylonians and conqured the Rapiqu and Shuites, and
considerably enlarged the extent of the Assyrian dominions. He was
succeeded by his son Shalmaneser I., B.C. 1300. He was also called
Benlikkish. Vul-nirari II., the son and successor of Assurdan
II., king of Assyria. He reigned about B.C. 913 to 891, and was a
great warrior, and restored the power of the Assyrian empire, which he
left in an improved condition to his son Tugulti-ninip II. The
Assyrian eponym canon commences from his reign. Vul-nirari III.,
the son of Samsi-Vul III., king of Assyria. He ascended the throne
when a mere boy, about B.C. 812, but he was able by means of his generals
not only to continue, but to extend the conquests of his father. In
twenty-five successive expeditions he subdued all the sea-coast of
Palestine, and conquered Mariha, king of Damascus, with the other Syrian
states. Vulnirari invaded Syria as far as the tribe of Manasseh, but
does not appear to have actually come into conflict with the Jews.
About the middle of his reign he invaded Babylonia, and his last
expeditions were against the Medes and the surrounding countries of
Hupuskia and Kibiki. He married the princess Sammuramat, who is by
some believed to have been the Semiramis of the Greeks. He built
several great palaces at Nineveh and Calah, and died after a reign of
twenty-nine years, leaving the throne to his son Shalmaneser III. B.C.
783. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
