WILFORD. Charnock
makes this a corruption of English Wilfred
(q.v.), meaning "resolute peace." (Praenomina, Charnock,
1882). But it is probably the same as Williford (see note
below), from A.S. willa (cf. O.H.G. willa; O.N. vili),
"resolute" or "will power," and ford "a
ford" or "watchman." (Surname Book and Racial History,
Gates, 1918).
Carson Wilford Leach (d. 1988), was an American film
and theater director, and screenwriter. Wilford Henry Gibson (d.
2001), was a British police officer in the London Metropolitan Police. (Wiki)
WILFORD. A loc. n., Notts.
Or Williford, Staffs. (British Family Names, Barber.
