WILFRID. English.
From Anglo-Saxon Wilfrith
(q.v.), meaning "resolute peace." It is the same as Old
German Willifrid, which
Junius translates "volens pacem vel affectuum tranquillitas." (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884). Charnock, however, derives it
from viel-frid, powerful protector; from frieden, tueri,
tutari. (Prænomina, Charnock, 1882). Also see Wilfred.
Wilfrid Stalker Sellars (d. 1989), was an American
philosopher. Wilfrid Hyde-White (d. 1991), was an English character
actor. (Wiki)
