WILLEM.  A Dutch form of German Wilhelm (q.v.), meaning "resolute helmet." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).

    Swan River, West Australia, was visited in 1696 by the Dutch seaman Willem van Vlaming in the ship Geelvink, and named from the abundance of black swans, two of which he brought home alive. (Names and Their Histories, Taylor, 1898).
