| WILLIFRID. Old
German name, meaning "resolute peace," from O.H.G. willa
"determined, resolute; will power," and frid "peace."
It is the same as A.S. Wilfrith.
Junius
makes it "volens pacem vel affectuum tranquillitas;"
i.e. "peace or traquility of affections." Charnock thinks
it is from viel-frid, powerful protector; from frieden,
tueri, tutari, protect, preserve. But he also makes Wilford
a corruption of Wilfred, which is probably wrong. (Prænomina, Charnock, 1882).
The prefix Willi- is O.H.G. willa; the same as
A.S. willa, and O.N. vili, "resolute; will
