WINWALOE. An
English form of Breton Guignole
(q.v.), meaning "he that is fair." Also see Winwaloei.
Saint Winwaloe (d. 529).
In Picardy, he is commonly called St. Vignevaley,
and more commonly Walovay;
in Brittany, Guignole, or more frequently Vennole;
in other parts of France, Guingalois;
in England, Winwaloe or Winwaloc.
(The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints,
Butler, 1846)
The
Monastery of Llandeveneck was founded by St. Winwaloe,1 about
the year 500. This great saint lived with his father near
Guic-Sezne, when a fleet of pirates was seen hovering about the harbour.
St. Winwaloe gave the alarm, crying out, "I see a thousand
sails;" their subsequent defeat was ascribed to his prayers, and
in after times a commemorative cross was erected there, which was
called "The cross of the thousand sails."...
1
St. Winwaloe was born in 455 and died in 529, "on Saturday, the 3rd
of March, in the first week of Lent." These data all agree
with the year assigned to his death. The name Winwaloe means
"He that is fair," and was given to him on account of his
great beauty...
