| XIANLIANG. Chinese name
meaning "worthy brightness." (Oxford) Zhang Xianliang
(1936-), was a university student who was arrested for publishing
counter-revolutionary poems in 1957. He spent 22 years in the Laogai
labor camps. He tells of his experience there in Grass Soup and My
Bodhi Tree. In writing of disease and pests in the camps, he said,
"the parasites on a single inmate's underpants would be as numerous
