YUSEF (يوسف). Another
spelling
of Arabic Yussuf (q.v.), a form
of Hebrew Yoseph, English Joseph,
meaning "Jehovah will
add." Also spelled Yousef,
Youssef, and Yusuf.
We find in
Arab names, as in those of the Hebrew race, expressions of eager
whole-hearted service to God... Many of the Hebrew names are retained in
them. Another of our
nursery friends, Haroun-el-Rasheed, is Aaron the Orthodox; Mousa
or Muza is Moses; Ayub, Job; Yusef, Joseph; Hanna, John; and amongst
their women's names it is singular to find Hosn Maryam, sig. The
Beauty of Mary, or Miriam... (What Is Your Name?, Moody,
1863)
