ZOHÂK. A mutilation of the original Zend expression
Ashi-dahaka [Azis-dahaka], meaning "pernicious serpent." (The
Myth of the Birth of the Hero, Rank, 1914). See Aj-dahâka.
ZOHAK. In Arabic history a mythical
conqueror and demon who carried two great serpents coiled on his
shoulders, which were fed with the brains of young men. Having long
corrupted and destroyed the people of Ispahan, he was slain by the people
in an insurrection headed by one Caveh, a blacksmith, whose two sons had
been slain to feed the snakes. The people then placed on
the throne of Persia, Feridun, the grandson of
Djemshid, which see. (An
Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
